The following information describes research fellowships offered from 1996 to 2002. The program is not currently offering these fellowships, though we hope to reopen the competition in the future.
With funds from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation (1996-2002) and The Pew Charitable Trusts (2001-2002), the International Migration Program offered fellowships for dissertation and postdoctoral research and for participation in a minority summer dissertation workshop to support research on immigration to the United States. From 1996 to 2002, the International Migration Program sponsored seven predoctoral and postdoctoral fellowship competitions and minority summer dissertation workshops in order to train scholars and advance their research on immigration to the United States. We awarded a total of 59 fellowships (36 predoctoral and 23 postdoctoral) and 44 students participated in the summer minority dissertation workshops. The current grant supported the 2000-2002 cohorts. Edited publications are expected to result from each cohort of fellows. Three volumes have already been published: Immigrant Faiths: Transforming Religious Life in America, edited by Karen Leonard, Alex Stepick, Manuel Vasquez and Jennifer Holdaway; Immigration Research for a New Century, edited by Nancy Foner, Ruben G. Rumbaut and Steven J. Gold; and Immigrant Life in the U.S.: Multi-disciplinary perspectives, edited by Donna R. Gabaccia and Colin Wayne Leach.
