Eastern Europe

These programs are administered by the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) and are subject to the availability of funding. They are intended to support research undertaken outside Eastern Europe, although short visits to the area may be proposed as part of a coherent program primarily undertaken elsewhere.

Fellowships will be offered for research and training in the social sciences and humanities relating to Albania, Bulgaria, the Baltic States, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and the former Yugoslavia. Proposals dealing with Albania, Bulgaria, Romania and the former Yugoslavia are particularly encouraged. In awarding these grants, consideration is given to the scholarly merit of the proposal, its importance to the development of East European studies and the scholarly potential, accomplishments and financial need of the applicants. All proposals should be for scholarly work, the product of which is to be disseminated in English.

East European Language Training Grants may be available to US institutions willing to offer intensive summer course instruction in Albanian, Bulgarian, Czech, Hungarian, Macedonian, Polish, Romanian, Serbo-Croatian, Slovak or Slovene.
