More than 50 junior researchers from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, Peru, the United States and Uruguay participated in this program. Fellows represented a broad spectrum of disciplines, including law, journalism, sociology, political science and anthropology.
Each year, fellows were asked to focus their research and fieldwork around a particular theme:
-
In 1999, fellows analyzed cultural, political and social conflict that stemmed from particularly potent sites and dates "lugares y fechas" of societal memory.
-
In 2000, fellows analyzed the role of different institutions and actors (e.g. the military, the media, the church, or particularly key individuals) in shaping the dynamics of memory in specific contexts.
-
Concerned with how youth articulate and make sense of the past, this set of studies analyzes forms of expression of memory, including popular and artistic expression and the roles of institutions in which youth participate.
The scope of the program was limited to the Southern Cone countries and Peru. Continuing efforts by program participants to develop work in this field are taking place with organizations such as the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in Peru and the Memory program at the Instituto de Desarrollo Económico y Social, (IDES) in Buenos Aires.
